About HUB 51

If it seems like HUB 51 is a continual party, that’s just what creators R.J. and Jerrod Melman want. Their dad, Lettuce founder Rich Melman, always told them that the restaurant business should be fun, and, as Jerrod now interprets that advice, “We want to be as playful as possible, and have a good time with our customers and the people we work with.”

“Our goal for the menu was to create food we like to eat,” says R.J. They loaded it up with sushi, tacos, sandwiches and burgers. Great salads and appetizers like the arugula Caesar and Pulled Chicken Nachos appeal to the bar crowd, while the filet mignon steak tacos and the charred sake salmon serve notice that HUB 51 is providing both a great time and wonderful food.

With dozens of beers, wines and sakes, HUB 51 is all about what you like. SUB 51, a private lounge below the restaurant, becomes an exclusive nightclub on weekends, while space in the main restaurant is also available for private parties and semi-private events.

With an interest in restaurants dating back to his teenage years, RJ began bussing tables and running food at age 13 at the former Bub City in Chicago. By high school, he was soon cooking at various Lettuce Entertain You (LEYE) restaurants where he further developed his understanding and passion for the restaurant business.

In 2001, RJ received his degree from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science and Communication Studies. Upon graduation, he immediately embarked the next phase of his career – restaurant management. In the past decade, RJ has helped open nine LEYE restaurants and has served as the general manager of LEYE’s iconic first restaurant, R.J. Grunts. He has also contributed to a variety of restaurant projects outside of the company as a consultant.

Residing in Chicago, RJ is active within the Chicago philanthropic and business community and serves on a number of boards and committees.

Jerrod Melman is managing partner of HUB 51, SUB 51 and Paris Club, the dining, nightlife and social establishments created by him and his brother, RJ Melman, in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, as well as M Street Kitchen and Stella Rossa in Santa Monica, California.

Jerrod’s earliest memories of working in restaurants began at the young age of 10 as a busboy at the original Maggiano’s.  After Maggiano’s, Jerrod took a five-year hiatus from the restaurant business to pursue other interests, namely finishing grade school.  During high school and college, he held various roles in a dozen or so Lettuce Entertain You (LEYE) restaurants, as well as IN-N-OUT Burger in Arizona, learning the business from the ground up.

The summer before his senior year in college, he participated in the LEYE internship program which confirmed his interest in pursuing a restaurant career. After graduating from DePaul University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Jerrod managed LEYE restaurants Osteria Via Stato and R.J. Grunts and gained valuable experience in New York working for B.R. Guests and Union Square Hospitality Group.

Jerrod brings this wealth of restaurant knowledge to each new venture he pursues. The brothers most recently teamed up with internationally-acclaimed Chef Jean Joho to present Paris Club, a casual French restaurant and bar that opened in February 2011.

A longtime Chicago resident, Jerrod is an avid supporter of several local philanthropic and community initiatives. He also enjoys playing basketball and softball, going to the movies, and a night out with good friends.

Dj Matt Roan

Chicago native Roan got his chops in the classically trained realm, studying piano, guitar and drums from the age of eight onward. Four indie records, a stint at Lollapalooza and several club residencies later, his beat master prowess has surpassed the various DJs he watched in awe at the Northside Puma store he once managed. By teasing partygoers with a carefully constructed wall of atmospheric choices from across the map, E-Six and DJ Matt Roan are a club experience akin to champagne and truffles at an abandoned warehouse party: completely unexpected.

E-SIX & ROAN ( FIRST LIVE A/V DUO ) Emerging from scenes seemingly worlds apart though identical in passion, virtuosity and cultural influence, Emilio Abadia and Matt Roan form what is possibly the most innovative and engaging DJ duo to infiltrate the Windy City. A drive to isolate, capture, cut-up and then synthesize moments of both sonic and visual art mark the experience of one of their performances. Their sets, which are as meticulously curated as a gallery show involves original and remixed videos that have resulted in a very respected event: Dance Party Magic, produced under the banner of their company Crossfader King.

In individual sets, Abadia, known as E-Six, and Roan bring elements of their divergent musical backgrounds to the fore, adding unique options to Chicago clubbers apart from their visual and audio mash-ups. Each a relentless selector, E-Six and DJ Matt Roan are the perfect purveyors of your party experience.

Dj Spider

Born and raised in Los Angeles, DJ Spider has worked tirelessly at developing his craft since he bought his first set of turntables in 1996.

Spider immediately gained recognition through a variety of avenues: Whether it was the development of his online radio show, TheBassment.com, or his role as producer and DJ of the hip-hop group, Move.Meant, the accolades came early and often. As his approach to music grew in popularity, Spider became increasingly exposed to unique opportunities.

More recently, Spider has made appearances on L.A. radio station giant, POWER 106, at the E! Entertainment Golden Globes Party in Hollywood with DJ AM, countless Sundance Film Festival parties, the Miramax Oscar Party, and several events surrounding the Super Bowl in Miami.

He has also licensed songs and compositions to major movies such as Oscar award winning CRASH, and network TV shows such as MTV’s The Real World.

DJ Spider’s introduction into the mainstream, however, came when he won the Next on the Decks contest presented by BPM Magazine in June of 2006. Although Spider had already cemented his reputation throughout the L.A. club scene, the contest propelled him to national notoriety.

As the winner of the contest, Spider was given the opportunity to tour with Mark Ronson, and perform with DJ AM at Mansion in Miami. Spider was also chosen to be the official tour DJ for Myspace parties throughout the country and consistently viewed on the main page as a featured DJ.

The more partygoers are exposed to Spiders diverse sound, the more he is embraced. His popularity has increased to the point where he is now one of the most desired DJ’s in the country for all types of events. Current residencies include some of the most highly acclaimed venues in the country, such as Pure in Las Vegas, Club Reserve in Chicago, and Stingaree in San Diego to name a few. Though he frequently travels the globe, you can still catch him in his hometown at Hollywood hotspots such as Winstons, Area, and Les Deux.

Dj Konsept

If DJ Konsept is one thing, it’s something to think about. In this city but a year, Chicago’s hottest transplant has been making an impression as an innovative artist that is quickly becoming indelible. Hailing from a town known for its music culture, Konsept was entrenched in Lawrence, Kansas’ spinning scene for close to a decade before heading this way. It’s a history that allows him to bring something new to the turntable – and with residencies at Sub 51, evilOlive, Juicy Wine Co., The Burlington and even Crunch Fitness, thousands are given the chance weekly to hear it.

His style varies, from Hip-Hop and House to Techno, Electro and the requisite Top 40. He’s also been known to rock Doo Wop, dub-step, funk, soul and Baltimore Club, as well as work of his own; he produces both original music and remixes. Comfortable fusing genres or playing it straight, Konsept is an unstoppable force behind the decks. And he makes people move. Every time. Period.

As the official And 1 Mixtape Tour DJ, Konsept’s work has taken him throughout Europe and the U.S., with a few Japan detours along the way. And every few weeks, he heads back to Kansas to head up NEON Dance Party, a Lawrence mainstay eight years in the running that has seen the likes of Flosstradamus, Ssion and LCD Soundsystem, among myriad others.

His spinning and promoting prowess (he’s been doing the latter for the last decade, too) have earned him numerous accolades, including three nominations by Pitch Weekly for DJ of the Year. And in 2002, Konsept was named Promoter of the Year by the Kansas City publication.

With years of experience under his belt and gigs the world over, Konsept can assess and address the needs of any crowd. He isn’t there to create background buzz; he enhances, morphs, revitalizes. And he could do the same for you. What a concept.

DJ Rock City

Few DJs can match the ferocity of the beats that DJ Rock City lays down. With a twist of his wrist, the mixmaster will go from Motown to House before the sweat beads form on your forehead. Having served as the 2007 Spring Break DJ for Maxim Magazine in Acapulco, the East Lansing, Michigan native is right at home as a resident DJ at the beautiful people epicenter of Chicago nightlife-The Underground, Studio Paris, and Sub 51. From his trademark Mohawk, style and mash-up mastery, Rock City has redefined the Chicago DJ.

DJ Jerzy

Contrary to popular opinion, being a deejay is a lot more than just pressing play. It takes raw talent to be able to command a room, whether its 20 people or 20,000 people. Jerzy was born with that ability.

Jerzy’s musical journey as a deejay & radio personality began through years of collecting, practicing and honing in on his musical expertise. His passion for music began before the days of CDs (and gasp- iPods); back when Jerzy would hold the microphone of a Casio recorder up to a boom box to tape-record mixes. He has not looked back and has been perfecting his craft ever since.

He began his radio career on one of Chicago’s top radio stations, B96, at the age of 21, making him one of the station’s youngest on-air personalities. Jerzy was still considered jailbait as he snuck into venues to host and promote various parties and events. It was through his networking and overall enthusiastic demeanor that led him from an internship at B96 to his current slot as an on-air personality.

Through his work on the radio and strong dedication to his craft, Jerzy’s recognition has developed from being ‘just another deejay’ to a skilled turntablist. He has been the talent of choice for A-List celebrities such as Michael Bay and Jeremy Piven and invited to spin alongside internationally known musicians like Justin Bieber, Mike Posner, and Pitbull.

Qualifying him as somewhat of a triple threat, his multi-faceted radio, production, and deejay titles are just the building blocks of a resume that reads like a portfolio of someone who has been in the business for decades.

Whether he is spinning records for the hottest venues, known charities, or Fortune 500 companies, Jerzy continues to establish himself in an industry that changes faster than Lady Gaga’s outfits. Jerzy will soon be the deejay you partied with last night while you tell your best friend you knew him before they did.
